The Spanish passenger car and off-road vehicle market has started the first month of the year with a 27.5% growth compared to January 2014, with 68,118 registrations. This is the best January the sector has seen since 2010 and the fastest growing in 20 years. The PIVE plan has maintained the strength of a market that, in 2014, began its recovery, with 17 consecutive months of growth.

The automotive manufacturers', sellers', and dealers' associations have reported that the increase in the private channel was 29.1%, reaching 40,990 units. In the business purchase segment, deliveries rose 21.7%, reaching 18,477 units, while in the rental market it rose 32.8%, reaching 8,561. "The impact of the PIVE plan is still being felt in the market; without it, registrations would be at much lower levels," Anfac states in a statement, in which it points out that "the ratios of vehicles sold in Spain per thousand inhabitants are still far from those of Germany or France."

In January, the best-selling brand was Volkswagen, with 6,629 registrations, followed by Seat, Renault, Opel, and Peugeot in fifth place. The star model at the start of 2015 was the Golf, which registered 2,560 sales, just behind the C4, the Seat Leon, the Ibiza, and the Megane, with just over 2,000 cars. The micro vehicle segment has seen strong sales growth of almost 50%. Even so, the best-selling cars continue to be those in the lower-middle segment and small cars. Medium and small SUVs and sports cars have also seen strong growth. The luxury market, with 225 sales, saw a 31% increase in sales.

According to the study “5th Adecco Report: Where to find a job if you are unemployed” , recently published by the company Adecco , the automotive sector is one of those with the highest demand for workers for 2014. Specifically, Adecco explains that the automotive sector is one of the areas that performed best throughout 2013, while, in 2014, exports linked to this industry and the increase in registrations in Spain suggest that the good performance of the productive fabric will be reflected in the creation of jobs.

In this sense, Adecco Automotive believes that in 2014, thanks to the sector's growth forecasts, the number of employees will increase demand for specialist operators in the automotive industry. This professional profile has maintained a higher-than-average level of demand in recent years, despite the crisis. This position works within a production line or assembly line, and their duties include screwing, assembling, wiring, and handling parts, as well as their verification and recovery within the chain.

Consumption in Spain is recovering, and one of the drivers is the PIVE Plan, as car sales are one of the main indicators of the evolution of private consumption.

It's time to take stock, and the automotive sector's performance couldn't be better this year as it draws to a close. In every sense, this sector is proving to be one of the strongest drivers of growth in Spain. Sales grew by almost 19%, as did production, at 10.9%, and exports, at 7.9%. The sector's trade balance improved to €16 billion, and foreign investment in Spain grew by over €2 billion in 2014. Employment also increased, with more than 20,000 direct jobs created in 2014.

Undoubtedly, the year just ending is a good one for the sector due to all the factors mentioned above, but the best part is that the foundation has been laid for this situation to be even more positive in the coming years. However, this positive outlook should not lead to complacency, but rather to continue working toward the future and ensuring sustained growth.

Let's start with car sales in Spain. Through November, the market has accumulated 18.1% growth, and December is proving significantly better than expected. Therefore, by the end of the month, with three days left, this growth will increase by several tenths of a percentage point. A good result that places us above 850,000 units, compared to just 700,000 two years ago, in 2012. And ANFAC, the association that represents manufacturers based in Spain, is now forecasting a million passenger cars for 2015 for the first time.

Spain is currently the driving force of the European automobile market. With cumulative data through November, the Spanish market is growing by 18.1%, double the second-best figure, the United Kingdom, at 9.4%, and well ahead of Italy, at 4.3%. Germany, despite a setback in November, is growing by 2.6% year-to-date, while France is the worst performer among Europe's largest automakers, at 1.1%.

The PSA Peugeot Citroën Group's Executive Committee has announced its decision to award the Vigo plant the contract to manufacture the K9 project, a new light commercial vehicle platform for various brands within the group and for Opel, thanks to the agreement signed with General Motors. The multinational's management has communicated the award in Paris to Alberto Núñez Feijóo, President of the Xunta de Galicia (Galician regional government), while the workers were informed at the Galician plant's facilities by Yann Martin, the factory director.

According to the newspaper El Faro de Vigo, citing industry sources, the supplier allocation process will take place during the first half of 2015, while vehicle manufacturing will begin in 2017.

Throughout the morning, reactions to the news have been emerging, undoubtedly one of the most decisive in recent months for the future of the Galician and Spanish automotive industry. Alberto Núñez Feijóo explained that "the awarding of this project to the Vigo plant is very important for Galicia. PSA Peugeot Citroën is a key player in the economic and industrial fabric of the region, and the Galician government is firmly committed to continuing to support this company and its Vigo factory to further improve their competitiveness."

For his part, Yann Martin noted that "this is the news we've all been waiting for in Vigo, because together we made it possible. After much work and hard effort, the decision that will be decisive for our future has been confirmed. The K9 will ensure a significant production volume in the next decade and will enable the execution of our Industrial Plan, through which we will profoundly transform the factory to make it more competitive and thus be ready for other new models."

According to Denis Martin, Director of the European Region at PSA Peugeot Citroën, “We have had strong ties with Galicia for years, which offers PSA and our Vigo site real opportunities for innovation. Today we confirm the allocation of K9 production to the Vigo plant, which has demonstrated its capacity to host this project. It's a great day for Vigo. PSA is the leader in the light utility vehicle segment in Europe, and the success of the K9 project is essential for our brands.”

Meanwhile, Yann Vincent, Industrial and Supply Chain Director at PSA Peugeot Citroën, stated that "as I mentioned on December 1st during my meeting with Alberto Núñez Feijóo, President of Galicia, the support provided by the Xunta (regional government) to strengthen the competitiveness of the automotive sector has been conclusive. The efforts made by all the workers at the Vigo plant within the framework of the proposed industrialization of a new model, responding to the Group's economic demands, have materialized today with the awarding of the K9 project to the plant. Now, work remains to ensure that the vehicle leaves the assembly lines under the required competitiveness and profitability."

The National Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers' Management stated in a statement that "the efforts made by all workers, employers, central and regional governments, etc., have been rewarded with this new project in the Galician region." In this regard, Mario Armero, executive vice president of the association, noted that "the decision made by PSA Peugeot-Citroën today is fundamental to the drive and support that Spanish industry needs. This investment represents a new opportunity for the future to expand Spain's industrialization and a very important step toward the goal of returning Spain to producing three million vehicles. This new project strengthens the industrial capacity of the country's factories. Spain and its automotive industry continue to make progress in industrial and economic development, but there is still a long way to go, and therefore, we must continue proposing initiatives and reforms to ensure Spain continues to progress."

King Felipe VI and President Artur Mas visited the facilities of the SEAT automobile company in Martorell today, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Ibiza, the brand's flagship model. During this visit, the monarch drove a Seat León with Mas as co-pilot.

Felipe VI arrived at the Seat headquarters shortly before 11 a.m. and held a private, closed-door meeting with a dozen Catalan business leaders, including the presidents of the Foment del Treball employers' association, Joaquim Gay de Montellà; the president of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, Miquel Valls; and the president of the Círculo Ecuestre, Borja García Nieto.

Mas, the Minister of Industry, Energy, and Tourism, José Manuel Soria, the president of SEAT, Jürgen Stackmann, and the Government Delegate in Catalonia, Llanos de Luna, among other officials, also attended this meeting. They then visited Workshop 10 of the plant, where the Leon and Ibiza models, the brand's most popular models, are manufactured.

The King of Spain arrived at the workshop's doors driving a Seat León Experience, with the President of the Generalitat (Catalan government) as co-pilot, and Minister Soria in the back.

According to sources within the Royal Household, the Seat Ibiza was the first car that Felipe VI owned, a vehicle given to him by his father, King Juan Carlos, when he came of age.

The delegation, which also included the Minister of the Interior, Ramon Espadaler, and the president of the Seat works council, Matías Carnero, visited the SEAT Ibiza assembly line, the innovation center, and the supervision center, where vehicles undergo final testing before going on sale.

At the assembly workshop, Felipe VI was able to learn about the dual vocational training system operating at Seat and greet the first cohort of students in these programs, who combine training with factory work, following the German model.

On his second visit to Catalonia since being proclaimed King, Felipe VI also saw some of the latest technologies incorporated into this workshop, such as ergonomic improvement systems and automated guided vehicles (ATVs) to supply the production lines, with the aim of increasing the factory's efficiency and competitiveness.

The authorities then visited the company's "meisterbock," the facilities where the vehicles' quality is tested, and were able to see firsthand the durability of the vehicle's sheet metal and interiors.

IMAGE GALLERY OF THE NEW Audi Q3

The manufacturer of air conditioning systems for vehicles and automotive fluids , the BORYGO brand, will participate in the production of the new Audi Q3.

After several months of bidding and nomination by the German group, Maflow Spain has been selected as the supplier for this new project. The company, located in the Guarnizo Industrial Park, has previously worked as an international supplier for Seat and Audi. Therefore, the Cantabrian manufacturer has enjoyed this competitive advantage over other aspiring companies.

Continuing along the path of Lean Manufacturing and addressing this new challenge, the company has made its resources and methods available to meet the brand's demands and the needs of the new Audi Q3.

For Maflow Spain, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, this award represents not only a financial injection, but also a return on its investment in R&D and a renewal of trust with a major automotive manufacturing group.

On the 17th, the Magdalena Palace hosted the "Talent in Cantabria" conference. Maflow Spain , the manufacturer of BORYGO antifreeze and vehicle air conditioning systems, was represented by Teresa Iglesias, Human Resources Director of Maflow Group.

The objective was clear: to recruit female talent in Cantabria and bring new faces and proposals to the initiative, which, since 2011, has sought to highlight the role of women in society and give voice to their opinions. The initiative has the support of the General Directorate of Equality, Women, and Youth of the Government of Cantabria, the Santander City Council, the Cantabrian CEOE (Spanish Association of Workers' Organizations), and the University of Cantabria.

Early in the morning, the Top 100 Women Leaders in Spain held a breakfast discussion featuring candidates and finalists from previous editions of the ranking. In the afternoon, the conference "Why can you too be one of the Top 100?" was given by Mercedes Wullich, director of Mujeres&Cía. and promoter of the Top 100 Women Leaders in Spain.

The Top 100, Celia Sánchez, a scientist, and Silvia Leal, an innovation expert, shared their own experiences as women leaders in an open interview with the meeting attendees. This interview, in which both offered their reflections on the situation of women, served as the basis for the debate "Glass Ceiling or Cliff?"

The first event of the Top 100 Women Leaders in Spain concluded with a cocktail party where participants took the opportunity to network and exchange ideas and suggestions.
